Travel took weeks, and you could be accosted regularly while travelling. This was a time before communication at light speed. You need time, and lots of it for a start. If we stopped the pointless 'free food' distribution and the resources of the Panth were spent on our people and on parchar inside and outside of Punjab, Sikhi would increase by leaps and bounds. Now we have organisations who waste the Panth's resources on feeding and raising the next generation of non-Sikhs and forgetting the needs of our own young. Our ancestors never felt this need, they never devalued Langar to being 'free food' Preaching of the Gurus' teachings went hand in hand with feeding the needs of those who thirsted for Gurbani. We have become the 'free food' people seeking acceptance and validation from feeding others. Now we do not even want to associate preaching the Gurus' teachings with Langar. We were proud to proclaim that Sikhi is unique and we proud to be Sikhs and were not attempting to win favour with others by wasting money and resources on pointless langars miles from any Gurdwara when the true meaning of Langar was a part of Pangat-Sangat, where the needs of the spirit and the needs of the stomach were both ,met. This was because we had not fallen into the liberal malaise that are in now. Up to 1947 Sikhs were increasing by a higher rate than both the Hindus and the Muslims. It is because we have become liberals and we have placed more emphasis on the meaningless and self defeating slogans like 'quality not quantity' and many of us even believe the falsehood that Sikhi is not a missionary religion and we do not seek converts. We don't appreciate Sikhi for what it is and make the effort to spread it. The issue with the Sikh community is that we are like a monkey that is playing with a diamond, thinking that it's just a rock. We should act in a way where when people see us they become inspired by our lifestyle and wonder how amazing the Guru must be, if his Sikhs are like this. Our community also does not have that many support groups, many of which are internally divided along political or theological lines. Most Sikhs unfortunately do not lead by example.

The biggest factors in someone joining a religion is seeing how people of that religion conduct themselves as well as being surrounded by a support group that helps them become accepted into that religion. We will even hold on to inefficiencies in our life just because we are sentimental about them or too lazy to change. A lot of our beliefs and culture are simply based on our circumstances, family, and tradition. Humans are not rational creatures and oftentimes do not act in their best interest. This is a very nuanced discussion and there is no one simple answer for this. Why not whole north indian hindus became sikh ? Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh
